Most people don’t fully consider the impact of taxes and fees on their future retirement income. Conventional wisdom is that people should invest in the stock market and then at retirement withdraw some percentage, often characterized as a “safe withdrawal rate”. But even if four percent (or any other percent) was in fact a safe withdrawal, it can be misleading because it does not consider the impact of taxes and fees. This article is designed to illustrate this and to get your clients thinking about the proper way to plan for retirement.
Excerpt:
When you want to withdraw $50,000 for your retirement income, if the tax rate applied to the withdrawal is 20 percent, $10,000 will go to pay taxes. But if that tax rate has increased to 30 percent, the tax payment would go up to $15,000.
